Programme
A new opportunity to experience the nuanced and powerful conducting of Stephanie Childress, principal guest conductor this season. She will led scores linked to the Palau de la Música Catalana, the venue where this concert will take place. In fact, the OBC began its career in this modernist temple as the Municipal Orchestra of Barcelona on March 31, 1944, under the direction of maestro Toldrà.
D’un soir triste, from 1918, an intensely emotional orchestral piece by Lili Boulanger, rich in impressionist reminiscences, will open the program. Next will be Joan Guinjoan’s “Fantasia del trencadís”, a symphonic excerpt from the ballet of his Gaudí opera. With its fascinating chromaticism, the piece presents a whole kaleidoscope of timbral possibilities.
The adventure will continue with the discovery of Les illes Medes, a symphonic poem composed by Juli Garreta between 1922 and 1923 and memorably praised by Igor Stravinsky. The concert’s evocations and expeditions into nature and will culminate with the ambitious and surprising Symphony no. 1 by Jean Sibelius, a work originally conceived as programmatic, depicting the evoked landscapes.
