A pianist of exceptional technique, emotional depth and sophistication, Denis Kozhukhin has gained significant recognition for his powerful performances, establishing himself as one of the most outstanding musicians of his generation.
Following his return to the BBC Proms and his debut at the Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 2024, this season sees him return to the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Luxembourg Philharmonic, with which he embarks on a tour of Spain under the musical direction of Gustavo Gimeno. He has also given recitals at Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Bozar in Brussels, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Philharmonies of Paris and Cologne, the Stockholm Konserthuset, the Boulez Saal in Berlin, and Wigmore Hall.
Other recent notable appearances include performances with the Oslo Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Danish National Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, the Düsseldorf Symphony, the symphony orchestras of Dallas, Melbourne and San Francisco, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the hr-Sinfonieorchester in Frankfurt, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the WDR Sinfonieorchester. He has collaborated with conductors such as Rafael Payare, Alain Altinoglu, Cristian Măcelaru, Hannu Lintu, Dalia Stasevska, and Santtu-Matias Rouvali, among others. Last season, he performed recitals and chamber music at the Boulez Saal, the Elbphilharmonie, Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Zurich Tonhalle.
Since winning the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2010, Denis has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Staatskapelle Berlin. A sought-after recitalist and chamber musician, Kozhukhin regularly takes part in many of the world’s leading festivals, including Verbier, Gstaad, Grafenegg, Dresden, the Intonations Festival, Tsinandali, Klavier Ruhr, Lanaudière and the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, as well as the BBC Proms.
As a Pentatone artist, his discography includes works by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Ravel and Gershwin.
A graduate of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, where he studied under Dmitri Bashkirov and Claudio Martínez-Mehner, Kozhukhin further refined his artistry at the Lake Como Piano Academy, where he received guidance from renowned pianists such as Fou Ts’ong, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Peter Frankl, Boris Berman, Charles Rosen and Andreas Staier, as well as from Kirill Gerstein in Stuttgart.
